In the early 1950’s many Italian families settled around Koo Wee Rup and we link to that community history by studying Italian at Koo Wee Rup Secondary College. Language learning builds on students’ intercultural understanding and sense of their own identity and heritage as we encourage students to explore and recognise their own linguistic, social and cultural practices, and use that knowledge and understanding to discover commonalities in the Italian language and culture.
Learning a language also develops students’ overall literacy, strengthening literacy-related skills that are transferable across subjects. Students of Italian have many opportunities to use the language in everyday life and knowledge of the Italian language can open doors to a wide range of employment prospects in the commercial, educational, scientific, chemical, automotive and hospitality fields. In addition, students with interests in the fields of art, architecture, music, literature, fashion, food and ballet benefit from rich Italian culture and history.
